Abner Eugene "Abbey" Green, Jr.

February 12, 1954 — March 11, 2024

Warner Robins

Abner Eugene Green, Jr. of Warner Robins, Georgia passed away peacefully and surrounded by his daughters on Monday, March 11, 2024, at the age of 70. Born on February 12, 1954, to the late Abner and Clara Green, Sr. in Topeka, Kansas, Abbey was the second of seven children in a home filled with four sisters (Nina, Phyllis, Barbara, and Shirley) and two brothers (Jeff and Charles).

An avid Warner Robins High School fan, Abbey played high school football there (Class of 1973) and never tired of sharing stories of his football days, coaches, and fellow players with his daughters.

His unwavering commitment to justice and to his community’s safety led Abbey to a Law Enforcement career.  Through two decades of service in both Georgia (Warner Robins, Gordon, and Perry) and Florida (Ponte Vedra, St. Augustine, and Key West), Abbey earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues and from the communities he served because of his bravery, integrity, and compassion.  His love of problem solving, and innate curiosity segued into a second career in engineering, when Abbey built gyros for airplanes at Robins Air Force Base.

Abbey’s love for his five daughters was legendary and his pride in their accomplishments well known: Lani Irvin (Scott) of Greeley, Colorado; Valerie Gates (Bruce) of Fulton, New York; Virginia Warthen (Michael) of Warner Robins, Georgia; Veronica Edens (Zachary) of Byron, Georgia; and Callie Green (Brianna Archibald) of Middleburg, Florida. His daughters thrived because of the laughter and love with which he showered them, and with his never-ending wish that each would follow her own dreams.  His daughters, fourteen grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, siblings, nieces, and nephews will forever treasure Abbey’s wonderful memory.

In addition to his parents, Abbey was preceded in death by his brother, Jeff.

Abbey’s absence leaves a profound void in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His legacy, however, will live on through the lives he touched.

As a reflection of Abbey’s lifelong commitment to growth, learning, and to helping others achieve, in lieu of flowers the Green family respectfully requests donations be made in his name to either the Houston County Sheriff’s Office, Operation Arresting Hunger, C/O Kevin Taylor, 202 Carl Vinson Pkwy, Warner Robins, GA 31088 or to the Warner Robins High School, Touchdown Club, 401 S. Davis Dr., Warner Robins, Georgia 31088.

A visitation with Abbey’s family and friends will be on Friday, March 15, 2024, from 1:30 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home.  A funeral service honoring Abbey’s life will follow at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home.  Afterward, Abner Eugene “Abbey” Green, Jr. will be laid to rest in Magnolia Park Cemetery.
