Albert David Avery, 71, joined his Lord and Savior in heaven on the evening of Friday, June 19, 2026.
Mr. Avery was born on February 21, 1955, in Milledgeville, Georgia to the late Albert Franklin and Mary Ella Quinn Avery. He spent his formative years in Jones County, attending Jones County High School but ultimately graduating in 1973 from Georgia Military College Preparatory School. He began his working life with Brown Construction building what became Brown and Williamson in Macon. In 1976, he transitioned to the Central State Hospital Fire Department where he served for the next 15 years. When his time there was completed, he moved to Baldwin State Prison where he was mandated as a Correctional Officer and served in numerous roles during his 17 year tenure. While these jobs formed his professional career, Mr. Avery was the type of person who always worked two or three jobs simultaneously. He was always busy with a side hustle whether stocking a grocery store, manning a bowling alley, providing security, or anything else where he might earn a dollar. He was very proud of his work as a temporary police officer in Atlanta during the Centennial Olympic Games in 1996.
Morningside Baptist Church in Macon was the centerpiece of Mr. Avery’s spiritual journey for 36 years. He experienced a very real relationship with Jesus, and he was passionate about leading others to salvation through Jesus. He served his church congregation for 10 years as a bi-vocational youth minister, pouring into the lives of countless young people as he led them as he pointed them to faith in Christ. He was also a deacon and an usher while handling much of the maintenance for the church facilities and keeping the yards looking nice for the worshippers each week.
An exceptional athlete, Mr. Avery was involved in many different sports throughout his life. While a student at Jones County High School, he served as manager for the Greyhounds football team. As a player himself, he enjoyed volleyball and pick-up basketball. An avid bowler, he was even part of a bowling team in his younger years. But the softball field was where he was most at home. He played in the church league for Morningside Baptist Church; he played with a team during his years with the Central State Hospital Fire Department; and he played with a team from the State Corrections Department. His athletic prowess did not end with his playing ability. He also worked on the Chain Gang for Veterans High School football and coached various sports over the years. He tended to be very vocal at sporting events, passionately offering his opinions to the coaches, umpires, referees, and other spectators.
If David Avery ever met you, he considered you to be a part of his family. He thrived on helping people do whatever needed to be done. Whether cutting grass, replacing a roof, repairing an air conditioning system, or driving a church bus, if he knew there was a need, Mr. Avery was there. Because of his emergency background with the fire department, he always remained calm during a crisis. The Avery home was a safe haven for anyone who needed a place to stay. He never met a stranger, and his heart was full of love for all who crossed his path regardless of their past mistakes or their station in life. He instilled a solid work ethic into his children and grandchildren, encouraging them to always do things right and give 110% from start to finish. He was forgiving, full of grace, and loyal—a fighter to the finish. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Doyle F. Avery; his parents-in-law, Thomas E. and Lois N. Robinson; and his brother-in-law, Michael T. Robinson.
His memory will forever be treasured by his adoring wife, Cindy Robinson Avery; his daughters, Angela M. Jenkins (Jacob), Amanda L. Avery (Johnathan), and Andrea A. Collum (Brandon); his grandsons, Timothy J. Avery, Solomon J. Avery, Evan R. Avery, Owen L. Avery, Aden C. Avery, and Iain E. Avery; his sister, Robin A Berggren; his sisters-in-law, Barbara A. Greer (Conley), Rhonda F. Krirat, Wanda K. Robinson, and Sharon J. Maraman (Adam); his brother-in-law, Mark S. Robinson (Gail); a host of other extended family members and friends.
The Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at Southside Baptist Church’s Main Campus in the Children’s Worship Center. A reception will immediately follow the service to give attendees the opportunity to celebrate a life well-lived.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests memorial donations be given in memory of Albert David Avery to Morningside Baptist Church Operation Christmas Child, 3519 Jeffersonville Road, Macon, GA 31217.
McCullough Funeral Home and Crematory has the privilege of being entrusted with these arrangements.
