Barbara "Babs" Smith

Barbara "Babs" Smith, 92, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 26, 2023, surrounded by her family.

Babs was born in Tarrytown, Georgia, on October 17, 1931, to William Walton and Elizabeth Calhoun Warnock. She attended Brewton Parker College and Georgia Teacher's College (Georgia Southern University) to earn her Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education. While teaching in Hinesville, GA, she met her husband, Joseph Elarbee Smith and they married in Tarrytown on August 22, 1957. Babs taught for 30 years ending her career at Russell Elementary School in Houston County.

Babs was a faithful member of Central Baptist Church for 51 years. During her years at Central, she served in Vacation Bible School, on the Benevolence Committee, Helping Hands, Infant Sunday School, and in many other opportunities within the church. One of her most favorite activities was participating in Central 5-0.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Joseph E. Smith, daughters, Claire (Jim) Sheffield of Roswell, GA, and Jodi (James) Clark of Warner Robins, GA; grandchildren, Elizabeth Clark of Colorado Springs, CO, Jim (Kelsey) Sheffield of Roswell, GA, Lauren (Colton) Johnson of Colorado Springs, CO, and Joseph (Margy) Sheffield of Sandy Springs, GA; great-grandsons, Marley Johnson and James Sheffield; sisters, Nancy Myers and Dale McGowan; and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to personally thank Visiting Angels, Georgia Cares, Pam Ingram and the Staff of Historic Roswell Place for their loving, kind, and excellent care.

A celebration of Babs' life will be held at McCullough Funeral Home Chapel on Thursday, November 30, 2023, with visitation beginning at 1:00 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. and the service immediately following at 2:30 p.m. Babs will be laid to rest at Magnolia Park Cemetery.

In memory of Babs, the family will accept flowers or donations may be given to Georgia Baptist Children's Home, P.O. Box 329, Palmetto, Georgia 30268; or to Central Baptist Church/Central 5-0, 1120 Lake Joy Road, Warner Robins, GA 31088.
