Barbara T. Asbell joined her husband, Max, in heaven on the evening of Tuesday, January 15, 2019. She was 83.
A native of Magnolia, North Carolina, and crowned “Miss Magnolia” of 1953, Barbara was the daughter of the late Matthew and Betty Mae Tucker. She was involved on stage and in musical productions from a very early age.
Barbara received her BS Degree in Elementary Education from East Carolina University where she completed her studies in 1956. She later received a M.Ed from Mercer University. Mrs. Asbell taught 2nd through 6th grades and Music in Houston County for 25 years before retiring in 1995. Prior to teaching in Houston County, she taught in Duplin County, North Carolina, and in Bibb and Dekalb counties, totaling 31 years of education. She and her husband, Max, an attorney, moved to Warner Robins from Atlanta in 1962.
Mrs. Asbell was always interested and active in a wide variety of endeavors and was bestowed with various titles and honors through the years. She was active in a number of civic and cultural endeavors in Warner Robins through Woman’s Club (Ed. Chm., and spearheaded the fund drive to purchase location of Speech and Hearing School); American Association of University Women (charter member and State Convention Chairman); served on the Board of Directors of the Warner Robins Convention and Visitors Bureau, Warner Robins Library Board member; Community Concert Board member; patron of Warner Robins Little Theatre; Beta Sigma Phi Sorority; and a founder of International City Choral Society for which she received the Outstanding Citizen Award from Jaycees in 1974. Other honors include Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award at Parkwood School (1986-1987), Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers – twice, and Houston County Teacher Hall of Fame in 2015.
Barbara judged many talent shows and high school and community pageants and was on the Miss Warner Robins Scholarship Pageant Board. She was on the approved list of Miss America Preliminary Judges, as well. In her free time, she enjoyed music, reading and traveling, which she and her husband did a lot of! Barbara and Max “saw the world” having visited and toured about 53 countries on over six continents.
Barbara and Max had one daughter, Elaine, married to John Tignor, and two grandchildren whom she dearly loved, Jaye Liana and John, Jr.
Visitation will be Friday, January 18, 2019, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. A funeral service for Max and Barbara will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 19, 2019 in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home. After the service, Max and Barbara will be laid to rest next to each other in Parkway Memorial Gardens.
