Bernard Walter Olson, a devoted Navy veteran, cancer survivor, and retired New York City Police Officer, passed away on Sunday, November 12, 2023, at the age of 88. Born in New York City, New York, on November 13, 1934, Bernard was the beloved son of the late Walter and Florence Sheridan Olson.
A man of courage and dedication, Bernard served his country with honor during the Korean War as a member of the United States Navy. His commitment to service continued as he later joined the New York City Police Department before retiring.
Beyond his military and law enforcement service, Bernard found joy in various pursuits. A skilled artisan, he was well-practiced in woodworking, carpentry, and the intricate art of jewelry making. His passion for machine and metal working reflected a meticulous attention to detail. Bernard's interests also led him to explore the aisles of Goodwill stores, pawn shops, and flea markets, where he amassed a collection of cherished and memorable items.
However, amidst his diverse interests, Bernard's greatest joy was found in his Catholic faith and the company of his family. He cherished moments spent with loved ones, creating a legacy of warmth, love, and shared memories that will endure through generations.
His memory will forever be treasured by his wife of 61 years, Joan Ellen Olson of Perry; children, Eileen Byrd (Mark), Michael Olson (Kimberly), and Eric Olson; grandchildren, Keegan Byrd (Sidny), Brenna Byrd (Fiancé, Skyler Bryant); as well as three great-grandchildren, Kaedon and Carlin Byrd, and Jackson Banks.
