On the afternoon of Thursday, June 15, 2017, Charles Kenneth Carpenter, 83, peacefully stepped into eternity.
CMSgt. Carpenter was born on November 29, 1933, in Franklin, North Carolina to the late E.J. and Ula Dean Carpenter. He graduated from Franklin High School where he excelled in all sports in which he participated. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy for four years. In 1952, he joined the United States Air Force where he proudly served as an HVAC Civil Engineer for thirty years before retiring in 1982, having attained the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. Subsequent to his military career, CMSgt. continued his service to his country as a civilian defense contractor. His post-retirement jobs included working as a National Security Analyst and Marking Manager for Lear Siegler Management Corporation; Vice-president of the Southeast Contract Compliance Division for Dominion Management Services; Vice-president of Business Development and National Security Analyst for Lon Coleman Corporation; and Vice-president of Contract Preparation and Operations as well as Vice-president of Contract Bidding and Cost Analysis for DynCorp.
Even after high school, sports continued to be an important part of CMSgt. Carpenter's life. He enjoyed golfing and playing fast pitch softball, and he coached his son's little league baseball and high school football teams. CMSgt. Carpenter was a Mason and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star where he served as Worthy Grand Patron in 2002 and 2003 with Laura Ann Livingston as Worthy Grand Matron. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Franklin, North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Charles Michael Carpenter; his brothers, Jack Carpenter, Ed Carpenter, Jr., Dean Carpenter, Robert "Bob" Carpenter; and his sister, Louise Darnell.
His memory will forever be treasured by his loving wife of 61 years, Barbara Sanders Carpenter.
Visitation with CMSgt. Carpenter's family will be Sunday, June 18, 2017, from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. A second visitation will be Tuesday, June 20, 2017, from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. at Macon Funeral Home in Franklin, North Carolina. The funeral service celebrating his life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 20, 2017, in the chapel of Macon Funeral Home with Pastor Don Moffitt officiating. Following the service, CMSgt. Carpenter will be laid to rest in Woodlawn Cemetery with full military honors. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 5962 Zebulon Road, PMD 359, Macon, Georgia 31210.
