Harry Matthews transitioned to his heavenly home on June 13, 2026, at the grand age of 99. He was born in Ringgold, Georgia on May 31,1927, the third of four brothers. He grew up in Rome, GA, graduating from Rome High School. Harry joined the Navy in 1944 for two years, then he served his country honorably for 32 years in the Air Force, retiring as CMSgt. This was followed by a distinguished career with the Air Force Civil Service.

Harry met his wife, Val, in Wiesbaden, Germany, where she worked as a civil servant for the Air Force. They also lived many years in Ramstein, Germany and traveled extensively around the world during their time in Germany. They enjoyed their years in Colorado Springs, at the US Air Force Academy, as well as several other stateside assignments. Harry was everyone’s favorite, always honest, witty, generous, and sharp-minded right up to the end. He will be greatly missed.

Harry and Val were married for 64 years until her death in 2018. In addition to Val, he was preceded in death by his parents, Wallace and Prentice; his brothers, Wallace, Jamie, and Hugh Don; and two nephews, Don Matthews Jr. and Jay Matthews.

Harry leaves behind his loving niece Cathy Matthews Marinan (Bob), niece Constance Matthews, nephew Dale Jumpp (Tricia), cousin Edward Trundle (Carolyn), and several great nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Summer’s Landing, Georgia Hospice, and his church family at Andrew Church for their superior care and friendship.

Visitation will be Friday, June 19, 2026, from 0900-1000 at McCullough Funeral Home followed by the funeral service from 1000-1100 with the Rev Carl Barnhart officiating. Following the service, Harry will be laid to rest in Magnolia Park Cemetery with full military honors.
