On the evening of Thursday, June 23, 2022, a Vietnam War veteran, CMSgt. James Sherman “Jim” Fraley, USAF (Ret.) passed away at the age of 78.
The son of the late Sherman Henry and Hazel Mae Harr Fraley, Jim was born on May 28, 1944, in Portsmouth, Ohio. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he proudly served for 30 years as an avionic systems manager. Jim retired with the rank of Chief Master Sergeant after earning several medals and ribbons including the Distinguished-Presidential Unit Citation. After his military career, Jim continued serving his country first as a technical writer at SAIC for 10 years, followed by his service at Gulfstream Aerospace for an additional 10 years until his second and final retirement.
To say Jim stayed busy in his golden years would be an understatement. He was an avid golfer and made three hole-in-ones at Pine Oaks Golf Course, which led him to ultimately taking the Senior Championship. Jim also loved to drive and traveled to see 49 of the United States. He was a devoted fan of the Kentucky Wildcats basketball team and was a member of the Honorable Order of the Kentucky Colonels. Jim also loved working in his yard and was a railroad enthusiast who proudly displayed a massive Christmas village with four trains each year.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded by his beloved wife of 55 years, Mary Bess Setters Fraley; and siblings, Wanda Saylor, Bonnie Fraley, and Louise Fraley.
His memory will forever be treasured by his children, James Edward “JEF” Fraley (Lara Relyea) of Macon; and JoAnna Fraley of Warner Robins; grandchildren, James Dorris, Rebecca Dorris, Thomas Dorris, Jake Fraley and Henry Fraley; siblings, Charles B. Fraley, Shirley Sadler, Judy Villa, Charles Setters, Anna Randall (Stephen); and niece, Katey Randall Stetsuk (Artem); as well as many other nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
