Dorothy “Dot” Hobbs Carpenter, was born in Miami, Florida on March 10, 1927, the only child of Mary Wright Hobbs and Edgar Hobbs. Sadly, her father died by the time she was three years old and her mother died when she was six. She was raised by her maternal grandparents, James M. and Fannie Huff Wright in Columbus, Georgia.
When Dot was fourteen years old and her grandmother had passed following a stroke, she and her grandfather began living with her Aunt Bill (Willie), her mother’s sister, and her husband, Doc Westbrook. As a Baker High School student in Columbus, Georgia, Dot lived next door to a family of several daughters and a piano playing son, Bernard Carpenter. She and Bernard became a couple and were married in 1946. After a few years in Columbus, and with three small children, Dot’s young family moved to Warner Robins, Georgia in 1954 where her husband, Bernard, began work at Robins Air Force Base.
Dot’s greatest joy in life was her three children. She was determined to be a loving, supportive, and firm Christian mother. After raising her young children to school age, Dot went to work outside the home. After a few years, her career continued at Flint EMC from which she retired. She loved Flint and all the people there; after retirement, she returned part-time for several years. She remained close to the Flint organization and attended retiree functions until the last year of her life. Dot’s many friendships at work, and relationships with community members, were a huge bonus and ever-lasting gift.
Dot had an outgoing, social nature and always showed kindness to everyone. She was a Girl Scout Leader, Cub Scout Den Mother, and board member of the Warner Robins Little League Association. She supported her children and their schools’ activities while they attended Lindsey Elementary, Tabor Junior High and Northside High School. She and Bernard were active members of Northside High School Booster Club for many years. All of her children’s friends were welcome in her home and at her table, especially on Chili Dog Saturdays. Dot was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Warner Robins. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Red Hat Society. Once retired, she enjoyed traveling and playing cards with friends, and going to planned lunches with her Flint Ladies group. She also enjoyed many day trips and vacations with her family.
Dot passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at home. She was predeceased by her husband, Bernard Carpenter. She is survived by her children, Dianne Carpenter Nesmith, Danny Carpenter (Shawn), and David Carpenter (Susan); grandchildren Laurie Nesmith Jones (Stephen), B.J. Nesmith (Kristi), Brian Carpenter, Jake Carpenter, Katie Carpenter Wilkerson (Brian), Brad Carpenter (Megan) and Amanda Carpenter Kay (Jacob); and great-grandchildren Caleb Jones (Kat), Anna Jones, Zach Jones, Carly Nesmith, Carter Wilkerson, Abram Wilkerson, Bo David Wilkerson, Lee Ann Carpenter, and Anna Kate Carpenter.
Dot eventually became more visually impaired requiring assistance with everyday activities. Her caregivers, Lorna Patrick, Karen White, and Patricia James, were highly and personally devoted to her care for the past few years. Dot’s family is especially appreciative of them and the love and care they provided up until the time of her death.
The family is indebted for the excellent care provided by her physician, Dr. Fabian Franco for over 20 years. In addition, they would like to thank the Heart of Georgia Hospice, especially those who provided compassionate care to Dot these past few months. Dot’s family is eternally grateful to her first grandchild, Laurie Jones, an experienced hospice nurse, who stayed with and managed the care of her grandmother with love, devotion, and expertise for the last two weeks of her life.
