Dorothy Spinney McCabe, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend, entered into eternal rest on August 1, 2025, at the age of 87.
Born on October 5, 1937, in Winn, Maine, to the late George Spinney and Leona Fitzgerald Spinney, Dorothy was raised in Parham, Maine. She graduated from Washburn District High School, and after school, began working with local farmers harvesting potatoes—a true reflection of her lifelong dedication and work ethic.
Dorothy pursued higher education at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Her passion for helping others led her to a meaningful career in the mental health field. She began working in retail at Ames for a year before transitioning to a role as a licensed social worker and mental health rehabilitation technician. She dedicated 15 years of service to Aroostook Mental Health Center before retiring.
Dorothy had many joys in life. She was an avid collector of Beanie Babies, a talented crocheter, and she loved spending quiet moments fishing. Outgoing and full of life, she touched the hearts of everyone she met. She was deeply loved by her family and friends and was known as the rock of her family—a devoted and excellent mother, and a steadfast support to her loving husband.
Dorothy and her husband shared a passion for travel and spent cherished time together exploring the country in their motorhome. She was a woman of deep faith and was a devoted member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Presque Isle for 25 years before moving to Kathleen, Georgia, in 1975. There, she became a faithful member of St. Patrick Catholic Church.
Dorothy’s warmth, strength, and generous spirit will be remembered by all who had the honor of knowing her.
In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her son, Stephen Dow and several brothers and sisters.
Her memory will forever be treasured by her loving husband, Joseph McCabe; children, Dean Dow (Linda), Brent Dow (Tammy), Karen Heron (Keith), and Starla McCabe; grandchildren, Charles Kelly, Stephanie Kelly (Nate), Dillon Heron, Riannon Heron, and Jacob Dow; four great-grandchildren; and siblings, Marsha Ward Dreose (Bob), Linda Gooch, and Basil “Sonny” Ward; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Rosary service will take place on Thursday, August 7, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church, followed by a visitation will follow until 8:00 p.m. A memorial mass will be held on Friday, August 8, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Dorothy will be laid to rest privately, in Maine, at a later date.
