Evelyn Elizabeth Bassett Garvin

April 4, 1925 — June 3, 2024

Centerville

Evelyn “Elizabeth” Bassett Garvin passed away on Monday, June 3, 2024.  She was born to the late E. J. and Evelyn Nobles Bassett, in rural Houston County, on April 4, 1925.  While her father was a tenant farmer, Elizabeth and her family moved to different farms in both Bibb and Houston Counties.

In 1943, Elizabeth joined the workforce on Robins Air Force Base, as a cashier at the BX, after attending Byron High School. Two years later, she met the love of her life, the late Roy J. Garvin, and they were married on August 2, 1947.  Elizabeth stayed at home taking care of her young daughter, Linda before returning back to work on Robins Air Force Base in the early 1960’s.  She retired after nearly two decades in her career as an accountant.

Elizabeth was an avid reader, an excellent seamstress and enjoyed working in her yard.  She also loved watching the daily news and keeping up with current events. For many years, Elizabeth and her sisters often enjoyed taking trips and having lunch together.

Above all, she was of the Baptist faith and a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Centerville, formally known as Hattie Baptist Church.  Elizabeth read her bible every night and was actively involved in the Women’s Missionary Union (WMU) and the Senior Ladies’ Sunday School class.

After 56 years of marriage and the passing of her loving husband Roy in 2004, Elizabeth became completely self-sufficient.  While living on her own until the age of 99, she could be found doing her own yardwork and independently taking care of herself.

In addition to her husband and parents, Elizabeth was preceded in death by her siblings, Louise Keene and Marvin Bassett.

Her memory will forever be treasured by her daughter, Linda Carol Garrett (Lee) of Centerville; granddaughter, Erin K. Garrett; sisters, Martha Sims, Ann Mason, and Jeannette Smith (Woodrow); sister-in-law, Polly Bassett; as well as several nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

Visitation will be Friday, June 7, 2024, from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home.   A funeral service will immediately follow at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home.  Afterward, Elizabeth will be laid to rest in Centerville Cemetery.
