Evelyn Kitchens Grizzle

September 2, 1932 — July 8, 2015

Mrs. Evelyn Kitchens Grizzle, age 82 years, passed away peacefully at home on July 8, 2015 following a brief illness. She was surrounded by her three children and had amazing support from extended family and friends during her illness. Mrs. Grizzle was a resident of Bonaire, Georgia for 52 years.
She was born on September 2, 1932 in a rural Macon County, Georgia community known as "The Cutoff" outside of Oglethorpe. Her parents were the late Mary Lou Chambliss Kitchens and Henry Grady Kitchens. She was the sixth child born in a family that included five brothers and two sisters and grew up working on the family farm. As she was fond of saying, "We didn't have anything, but we didn't know it." In 1961 she married the late Robert Dean Grizzle of Montezuma. They lovingly raised their three children in Bonaire. Mrs. Grizzle was team mom, softball coach, bible school teacher and she volunteered for pretty much everything involving her children. Her heart was always with her large family – each and every one of them.
Mrs. Grizzle worked in banking prior to her marriage and went back to that profession when her children became young adults. Her caring personality and ever-present smile made her a role model of customer service. She retired from C & S Bank in 1992 to care for her husband who was fighting lung cancer.
Mrs. Grizzle was an active member of the Bonaire United Methodist Church for the last 50 years. She loved her church and was a fixture in every part of it. She participated in nearly everything the church did, from charitable endeavors to the choir and beyond. But mostly, she loved everyone there and did whatever she could to help. Her passion was people – and from them she gained her boundless energy.
She could often be found working in her yard, or attending any activity or performance involving her favorite people – her four grandsons.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Dean Grizzle; sisters, Willie Mae "Billie" Kitchens Athon of Leslie, Laura Elizabeth Kitchens Reynolds of Ozark, Alabama; and brothers, Seaborn Lewis Kitchens of Macon County, Georgia, and Robert Lee Kitchens of Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Mrs. Grizzle is survived by her three children son, Glen Robert Grizzle (Tamara Renie Grizzle) of Peachtree City, daughter, Mary Grizzle Oakley (Philip Davidson Oakley) of Warner Robins, and Jan Grizzle Douglass (Craig Paul Douglass) of Monroe County; four grandchildren, Joseph Benjamin Grizzle of Milledgeville, Alexander Robert Oakley of Warner Robins, Jon Patrick Grizzle of Peachtree City, Nicholas Allen Oakley of Warner Robins; three brothers, Grady Eugene "Gene" Kitchens of Hideaway, Texas, Charles Ronald "Ronnie" Kitchens of Pelham, and Jessie Thomas "Tommy" Kitchens of Bonaire, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Evelyn Grizzle touched countless lives and approached each day with faith and kindness. To everyone who knew "Miss Evelyn," she was the embodiment of love.
She will be missed by all who knew her.
