Fernando G. Hernandez, Jr.

August 17, 1954 — February 19, 2025

Macon

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Fernando G. Hernandez, Jr. of Macon, Georgia, who died on February 19, 2025, at the age of 70. Fernando was born on August 17, 1954, in Havana, Cuba, to the late Dr. Fernando Garcia Hernandez, Sr. and Renee Garcia (Casabuena) Hernandez.

Fernando’s childhood began in Cuba, where he attended Belen Jesuit Preparatory School before fleeing communism with his family in 1961. His family then relocated to Montgomery, Alabama, finding a community to rebuild their lives. They then moved to Warner Robins, Georgia, where the family prospered for many decades. Fernando graduated from Mount de Sales Academy in 1973, where he made a strong impression for his actions, creativity and care he showed to others.

Following his high school years, Fernando received degrees from both Mercer University and the University of Dayton. Following college, he worked at Sears and in life insurance sales before pursuing a career in electrical engineering at Robins Air Force Base. Notably, he contributed to the Wild Weasel Program, U.S. Air Force liaison work with the Egyptian Air Force, and with numerous planes including the B-1 Lancer and F-15.

While living a complicated life, Fernando was known for finding special ways to go above and beyond for others. Additionally, Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Parish represents a core part of his community where he remained an active, giving member for most of his life. He also taught Sunday School classes for over a decade, including for his dear son Jimmy [James].

A lover of gardening and local architecture, his knowledge of these areas was a vital treasure trove for all those around him. A green thumb does little to cut it, in describing the flourishing variety of plants and landscapes he attended to. There was no better guide to Middle Georgia, particularly Macon, architecture and those places’ stories.

With a remarkable mind, Fernando’s love of art and music, along with personal research interests, often found brilliant ways to show through to those closest to him. He could find brilliant ways to navigate through tough situations, and fight for issues and people closest to his heart.

Fernando's legacy will live on through his past acts of love and generosity, along with every plant and bit of nature or greenery he touched and treasured throughout his life.

His memory will forever be carried by his son, James [Jimmy] H. Hernandez; siblings, Dr. Maria Bartlett (Keith) of Macon, Georgia, Tom Hernandez (Carol) of California, and Joseph Hernandez (Sonia) of Macon, Georgia; aunt, Graciella Campo; cousins, Gustavo (Zoe) Alonso and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial mass will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Afterwards, Fernando will be laid to rest in Magnolia Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests memorial donations be given in memory of Fernando Hernandez to Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 300 S. Davis Drive, Warner Robins, GA 31088.
