Fred Robert Sutherland, 84, passed away on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.

Fred was born on September 11, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois, to the late James and Corine Sutherland. He would attend the Illinois Institute of Technology, where he earned his PHD in physics. Fred led a successful career as a scientist and was instrumental in developing key software for C-130s during his time with the Department of Defense.

In his free time, Fred enjoyed sports – he was an avid tennis player and he never missed a chance to throw golf on the TV. He was also a successful day trader and had a great time trying to land a great deal. Above all, Fred was a great family man. While he had no biological children of his own, Fred was privileged to serve as a father figure for many. His hard work, kind heart, and dear soul will not soon be forgotten.

In addition to his parents, Fred was preceded in death by brothers, Robert Sutherland and James Sutherland, Jr., and his sisters, Doris Sutherland and Corine Sutherland.

He is survived by his brothers, Smith Sutherland and Edward Sutherland, along with a host of extended family and friends.

At the request of the family, all services will be private.

The family will accept flowers or memorials may be made to a charity of your choosing in Fred’s memory.
