Horace Turner Short, 84, passed away on Thursday, October 15, 2026.

Horace was born on November 28, 1941, in Bradenton, Florida, to the late Emory and Alene Quattlebaum. He proudly served his country with the United States Air Force for many years, eventually retiring as a Master Sergeant. He was a devoted family man – he dedicated himself to raising and caring for his family, alongside his beloved wife, Paula Fair Short, with an inspiring degree of faithfulness.

In his free time, Horace enjoyed the water – whether it was fishing, relaxing on the beach, especially in Carrabelle, trips to Biloxi, or enjoying some good seafood. He could also often be found tending his garden, hanging out in his coin room, and pulling for his Florida Gators through thick and thin. Above all, Horace’s favorite times were any spent with his dear grandbabies.

In addition to his parents, Horace was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Sarah Rae Peller, and his brothers, Al and Ed Quattlebaum.

He is survived by his children Troy Short, Lori Short (Danny), Jody Mitchell (Dawn), and Jamie Mitchell (Shelley); his grandchildren, Sarah, Brett (Caroline), Dustin (Katie), Kaylee (Kyle), Kelsey (Jacob), Zade (Kasey), Hannah, Tori (G), Alex (David), Grant (Ella), Natalie (Dylan), and Jersie (Seth); and his great grandchildren, Drew, Frankie, Kelly Grace, Kennedy, Selena, Addi, Lyla, Zora, JT, Dawn Lee, Karson, Flint, Zeb, Rowan, Emersyn, and Onyx; along with a host of extended family and friends.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 22, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home, with a funeral service to follow at 12:00 p.m. in the Chapel of McCullough Funeral Home. Horace will then be laid to rest at Andersonville National Cemetery at 2:00 p.m.

The family will accept flowers or memorials may be made in honor of Horace to a charity of your choosing.

McCullough Funeral Home and Crematory has the privilege of being entrusted with these arrangements.
