Hugh Glen Dykes, Jr., affectionately known by friends and family as “Willie,” passed away peacefully on May 29, 2025, at the age of 80. Born on March 6, 1945, in Jackson, Mississippi, Glen was the beloved son of the late Hugh Glen Dykes, Sr. and Rosalie Paris Dykes. He was raised in Cary, Georgia, where his lifelong passion for the outdoors and sports first began.
From a young age, Glen was a natural athlete. He excelled in baseball, golf, hunting, and especially fishing—interests that shaped his life and forged many of his closest relationships. After graduating from high school, he proudly enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving four years in the military police. His service took him overseas to Turkey and England, where he developed a quiet resilience and strong sense of duty that he carried throughout his life.
Following his honorable discharge, Glen returned home and worked alongside his father installing wood-burning stoves before joining Dykes Grassing. He later became the Grounds Division Manager at Robins Maintenance, where he remained until his retirement in 2005. Never one to stay idle, Glen went on to run his own successful landscaping business, D & S Landscape, until his full retirement.
Glen was perhaps best known for his deep love of fishing and fierce competitive spirit. A longtime and respected member of the 26 Bass Masters out of Macon, he won several state championships and competed in regional tournaments with dreams of reaching the Bassmaster Classic, and on a couple of occasions came close to doing so. His skill on the water was matched only by his quiet humility—he let his actions speak louder than words, and when he did speak, people listened.
A man of few words, Glen found joy in life’s simple pleasures: the sparkle of Christmas lights, the magic of Disney, completing puzzles, playing card games, and above all, the laughter of his grandchildren. He was a devoted grandfather who never missed a game, a match, or a moment to cheer them on.
Hugh Glen “Sport” Dykes, Jr. lived a life marked by service, strength, and quiet grace. He leaves behind a legacy of love, discipline, and unwavering support for his family.
In addition to his parents, Glen was preceded in death by his step-mother, Mary Dykes and sister, Carolyn Day.
His memory will forever be treasured by his loving wife, Lenora; children, Jimmy Dykes of Eastman, Nicole Bissette (Nathan) of Bonaire, Sandi Homan of Eatonton, and Billy Dollar (Jennifer) of Warner Robins; grandchildren, Kelby Dykes (Victoria), Skyler Phagan, Raven Merritt (Max), Michael Key (Colleen), Emily Borgshatz (Donovan Mack), Isabelle Dollar, and Thomas Dollar; great-grandchildren, Shelby Phagan, Ada Rose Phagan, Murphie Simmons, Ellie Merritt, Emmett Key, and Evelyn Key.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 1, 2025, in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home. Afterward, Glen will be laid to rest privately.
