Staff Sgt. James Pilcher Avrett, Jr. (“Jim” to most), was truly one of a kind. He never met a stranger. Whether you were a lifelong friend or someone he’d just bumped into at the grocery store, Jim could talk to anyone about anything—whether they wanted to chat or not! Jim’s sense of humor was as unique as he was, and his famous “dad-isms” often left us rolling our eyes as much as laughing. You always knew when Jim was in the room, and life was never boring with him around. He was always himself—unapologetically and unmistakably Jim.
Born in Louisville to James, Sr. and Ellen Avrett, Jim graduated from Warner Robins High School in 1967 and attended Brewton Parker and Andrew College. Though drafted into the Army and released for being an only son, Jim’s sense of duty called him back. He reenlisted and served his country for twenty years, traveling to Italy, Korea, Maryland, Oklahoma, Germany, and Texas. He retired in 1989 and returned home to Warner Robins.
Jim was active in his community and organizations, always ready to join a group or start a conversation. He was a faithful member of Central Baptist Church and participated in organizations like Sons of Confederate Veterans, R.O.M.E.O. (Retired Old Men Eating Out), U.S. Army Association, Disabled American Vets, National Order of Trench Rats, Vietnam Veterans of America, School Nutrition Association, and The United States Army Chaplain Corps Regimental Association.
Jim leaves behind a family who loved him, quirks and all, and a legacy of stories that will be retold for years to come. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of fifty-one years, Charlotte Susan Avrett, who passed away just five days before him. Jim was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by three children, Mandy Couey (Guy), Wendy Forster (Anthony), and Jamey Avrett (Kristie), as well as seven grandchildren: Aiden, Kennedy, Abby, Skylar, Shepherd, Carrabelle, and Jameson. His extended family includes cousins Mike Miller (Diane) and Carol Miller Boyd (Gerald), as well as nieces, nephews, and a large extended family.
Jim’s life reminds us that it’s okay to be a little odd, to speak your mind, and to leave people with something to talk about.
