James “Jimmy” H. Borders, Sr, born on January 14, 1949, passed away on Sunday, August 31, 2025, after bravely battling years of heart disease. He will be remembered as a dedicated Christian family man with a remarkable work ethic, along with many talents. He was predeceased by his parents, George Hill Borders and Juanita Davis Borders, as well as his brothers, Johnny Borders and William “Billy” Borders.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Cathie Borders; children, (Retired) Staff Sergeant James H. Borders, Jr. and Tanya (Drake) Mathews; granddaughter, Mallory Mathews; sister, Darlene (Tommy) Wood, and sister-in-law, Jeanette Borders, along with many nieces and nephews.
He retired from Armstrong World Industries and Graphic Packaging after a long and successful career. He was a member of the international Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers and local union 1034.
He was widely recognized for his dedication to restoring antique tractors and presenting them at exhibitions. Fondly known as “Tractorboy”, his hobby was in vintage John Deere tractors, and he was committed to revitalizing them. He saw something special in the “Old Iron” and loved bringing them back to life for the younger generation to learn about their history.
He was a longtime member of Liberty Church Macon, and a former member of Avondale Baptist, Pine Forest Baptist, and Tabernacle Baptist where he worked with Sound and taught RA’s and Sunday School, as well as children’s church, bus ministry, and Montpelier Station. He was an ordained deacon and served as chairman of deacons at Porterfield Baptist Church. His testimony was always a commitment in Christian principles and values.
Visitation will be Thursday, September 4, 2025, from 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Liberty Church Macon. A celebration of life will immediately follow at 1:00 p.m. with Dr. Will Farrington, Dr. Rob Kestler, and Reverend Jack Osburn officiating. Afterward, he will be laid to rest in Glen Haven Memorial Gardens.
