James Henry Mercer, Jr., 81, entered into rest on Friday, October 23, 2026.

James was born on December 18, 1944, in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, to the late James and Mavis Mercer. Following High School, James enlisted in the United States Army, with whom he proudly served his country with a characteristic devotion. Following his stint with the Army, James began his career in the fuel industry, eventually retiring as the Vice President of Tech 21 Industries. He continued doing contract work with the 78th medical group at Robins Air Force Base.

Nothing was more important to James than his family and his Lord. He dedicated himself to raising his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren in love that was hard to match. Through his words and actions, James stood as a model of Christlike behavior that has left a significant impact on generations.

In his free time, James was an aviation enthusiast – he loved to fly – and was a big fan of music.

In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carolyn George-Mercer, his daughter, Paula Mercer, his grandson, Logan George, his sister, Betty Mae, and his brother, Ray Mercer.

He is survived by his children, Bo George (Alleen), Chris George (Audra), and Angie Mercer; his grandchildren, Bo George, Jr., Garrett George, Braden George; his great-grandchildren, Rylan Kate George and Waylon Desin; and his brothers, Buddy and Roger Mercer; along with a host of extended family and friends.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 31, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. A funeral service will take place at Southside Baptist Church on Sunday, November 1, 2026, at 2:00 p.m.

The family will accept flowers or memorials may be given in honor of James to the Wounded Warriors Project.

McCullough Funeral Home and Crematory has the privilege of being entrusted with these arrangements.
