James Wendell Williams, Sr.

James Wendell Williams, Sr., was born on January 9, 1942, in Blackshear, Georgia, to the late Alfred Williams and Nettie Blocker Williams. He lived a life marked by service, creativity, faith, and deep love for his family.

After graduating from high school, James proudly served his country in the United States Army. Following his military service, he built a long and dedicated career as a Technician with Lucent Phone Service, where he was known for his strong work ethic and skill.

James had many passions that brought him joy throughout his life. He loved playing the guitar and found great satisfaction in woodworking. An avid fisherman, he cherished time spent near the water, as well as the peace and reflection it provided. Music and faith were central to his life, and he shared both as a member of the Scrap Iron Five Christian singing group. A devoted Christian, James was a faithful member of Northside Baptist Church. He also enjoyed traveling and experiencing new places.

Above all, James deeply loved his family, who were the center of his life and his greatest source of pride and happiness.

In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his children, James Wendell Williams, Jr., Lewis Earl Hughes, and Linda Gayle Ethridge; brother, Layman Odean Williams; along with his beloved wives Lounell Kersey Williams and Shirley Luther Williams; daughter-in-law, Gloria Hughes; and son-in-law, Frank Ethridge.

His memory will forever be treasured by his grandchildren, Trenten Williams (Jenny), Austin Williams (Kayla), Vicki Grabowski (David), Sondra Lykins (Tom), Lewis Hughes, and Jason Hughes; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; son, Larry Joe Hughes; and daughter-in-law, Denise Williams.

A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, December 27, 2025, at Magnolia Park Cemetery.
