Jerry Don Spillers, a man whose life is commemorated by service, friendship, and a passion for the great outdoors, passed away on Thursday, August 31, 2023, at the age of 85. He was born on December 10, 1937, in Macon, Georgia, to the late J.D. Spillers and Anne Spillers Rodgers.
Jerry took great pride in joining the United States Air Force as a young man, where he served with honor and distinction for several years. His commitment to serving others continued as he transitioned into a career as a police officer. Jerry's role in law enforcement was not just a job – it was an opportunity to connect with people, forming bonds that went beyond his official duties. He was not only an officer but also a true friend. Later in life, Jerry found a new career path in the car business, and became a skilled salesman. He had an innate ability to connect with others, making them feel valued and understood. As the years passed, Jerry's journey took him back to his roots, this time as a civilian at Robins Air Force Base. He dedicated many years to Aircraft Maintenance, serving diligently until his well-deserved retirement.
After retirement during his full-time enjoyment, Jerry spent many hours cultivating his garden and nurturing his peaches, plums, and blueberries. He took the time to fully embrace his passion for the outdoors, creating many fond memories with his wife, Beverly, their sons, and several friends through activities like hunting and fishing. His adventures even took him to Mexico and Argentina, where he pursued his love for bird shooting. Whether it was taking the motor home across the country with Beverly to meet friends, or joining his sons and grandchildren on their hunting property - if it involved a fishing pole or camouflage clothing, Jerry was there!
Holidays and weekends were special to Jerry as he cherished time spent with family and friends. Without using recipes, he whipped up entire meals and hosted gatherings with an open heart, inviting loved ones to savor his creations. Jerry’s prized key lime cakes were a favorite to all who had the pleasure of tasting them.
Jerry’s legacy will live on in the hearts of his family and friends. Until their heavenly reunion with him, Jerry’s presence will be deeply missed at the dinner table, in the fishing boat, and on the hunting property.
A visitation with family and friends will be held on Sunday, September 3, 2023, from 5:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home.
