Joe Lee Thomas, Sr. was a man defined not by titles or formal education, but by the richness of his talents, the strength of his character, and the depth of his love. He passed away on Tuesday, March 24, 2026.
Born on July 14, 1944, in Macon, Georgia, Joe was the son of the late Joe Brown Thomas and Emma Mae Johnson Battle. He attended Ballard Hudson High School.
A skilled craftsman, he spent over a decade and a half working in construction, leaving behind a legacy built with his own hands including contributing to a prominent building on the campus of Fort Valley State University during the 1980s.
He was truly a jack of all trades. Gifted with natural artistic ability, Joe Sr. could draw effortlessly, capturing human subjects with striking detail, and even transform simple matches into intricate works of art. His creativity extended into the kitchen, where he was known as a masterful cook and baker. His homemade tea cakes were cherished by all who had the pleasure of tasting them.
By nature, Joe Sr. was a quiet and reserved man who found his greatest joy in the presence of those closest to him. He preferred the comfort of family and trusted friends over large crowds. He had a deep appreciation for movies, especially horror films, and while he was often a man of few words, after a few spirits, he would share stories that brought laughter and connection. He was the kind of man who would give you the shirt off his back without hesitation.
Joe Sr. was not a perfect man, and he would have been the first to admit it. He faced his own struggles, and life did not always allow him to fully walk in his potential. Yet, what remained constant and undeniable was his deep, unconditional, and unwavering love for his family. His children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were the center of his world.
Joe Lee Thomas, Sr. will be remembered for his talents, his quiet spirit, and, above all, his enduring love for those he held dear.
Joe Sr. was preceded in death by two children, Reginald, and Felitia; a grandchild, Mary; and siblings, Willie Mae Johnson Whisby, Robert Johnson, Felton Johnson, and Dennis Cash.
He is survived by his wife, Vanessa Faye Thomas; children, Gloria Faye Howard, Joe Lee Thomas, Jr. (Sandra), Wanda Renee Wright (Craig), Richard Thomas, Kimberly Woods, Reginald Andre' Postell, and Felicia Thomas Phelps; 30 grandchildren; and 56 great-grandchildren, a devoted niece, Deloris Hodges, a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.
There will be a private family viewing, and a separate public memorial on [day], [mm/dd/yy] at [time] with repast held at the Lizella Pentecostal Church, 7545 Knoxville Road, Lizella, GA 31052.
McCullough Funeral Home and Crematory has the privilege of being entrusted with these arrangements.
