Larry Michael Sheets

October 18, 1956 — March 15, 2016

Larry Sheets, 59, went home to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Tuesday, March 15, 2016, after a lengthy illness.

Mr. Sheets was born on October 18, 1956 in Macon, Georgia. He was a 1974 graduate of Crawford County High School and later received an Electrical Engineering degree from Georgia Institute of Technology. Larry proudly served the war fighters of the United States Air Force. Employed at Robins Air Force Base with over thirty-six years of faithful service as a first rate senior Electronic Warfare engineer, Mr. Sheets was looked up to by his co-workers as a skilled mentor and resourceful supervisor. He also owned and operated Sheets Communications and Roberta Realty.

Larry was a beloved member of Roberta United Methodist Church where he was an organist for over 40 years. He was a long standing member of the Association of Old Crows, as well. In his spare time, he enjoyed the beach, boating, and spending time at the lake. He loved music and had a passion for playing the piano. Mr. Sheets was preceded in death by his father, Robert Lee Sheets, Sr. and his brother, Robert Lee Sheets, Jr.

His memory will forever be treasured by his loving wife of 23 years, Sheri Jordan Sheets of Warner Robins; son, Layton Sheets of Warner Robins; and mother, Norma Sheets of Roberta.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, March 17th from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. A second visitation will be held at Roberta United Methodist Church on the evening of Friday, March 18th from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 19th at Roberta United Methodist Church with Pastor Tommy Odum and Pastor Jim Hamlin officiating. Following the service, Mr. Sheets will be laid to rest in Roberta City Cemetery.

On Tuesday, March 22nd, Sheri and Layton will be honored to receive the Association of Old Crows Gold Medal at the Annual Dixie Crow Award Ceremony for Larry. The gold medal is the AOC's highest and most prestigious award. It is presented to a senior U.S. or International Government, Military or Industry official in recognition of outstanding and dedicated service to promote and advance the discipline of Electronic Warfare. It reflects the highest standards of commitment to the welfare of Electronic Warfare. Larry was dedicated to the association and met the following qualifications to earn this award: "a.) 37-year Electronic Warfare (EW) subject matter expert personally developed organic government capability to perform ALR-46/ALR-62/ALR-69 Radar Warning Receiver (RWR) operational software updates; two year reduction in fielding time and saved $10M per year, b.) single handedly wrote RWR software; reduced false alarms/improved threat identification accuracy; significant impact to warfighter safety!, c.) Spearheaded USAF EW RWR block cycle process; paved way for EW upgrades to be performed organically saving $150M over a seven year period! d.) Directly performed or spearheaded over 25 block cycles and urgent software changes, e.) Led successful Air Force development/deployment of a sustainment capability for state-of-the-art EW Electro-Optical/Infrared (EO/IR) systems—uncharted territory without precedent!, f.) Led team analyzing system defect leading to enemy missile impact on two USAF aircraft resulting in no further successful missile shots and ability to resume desired flight operations!, g.) Unparalleled skills enabled rapid resolution using government lab; shaved months off the schedule, h.)Masterfully developed and executed a program to produce line replaceable units within 120 days using government assets; saved $5M, i.)Demonstrated outstanding leadership skills as the MH-53 EW program Tech Director, j.) Created comprehensive sensor fusion capability for six legacy EO/IR and Radio Frequency systems; created most capable legacy EW suite in USAF; credited with saving lives and aircraft!, k.) Evolved MH-53 software to integrated combat system; millions saved in development of cost."
