Leona B. Hurst passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at 92 years old.
Leona was born on November 10, 1933, in Newberry, Florida to the late David Irvin and Mary Pearl Bass. She graduated from Alachua County High School. She devoted her life loving her family, serving her community, and living out her faith.
In 1951, Leona married the love of her life, David William Hurst. She was the wife of a military man, and the couple traveled throughout the US before eventually landing in Eastman, Georgia in the 1950s. They lived in Eastman for around 30 years before moving to Byron, Georgia in 1988. Leona moved to Dublin in 2016.
Leona was the Executive Director of the Housing Authority in Eastman and surrounding towns.
She loved fishing, scrap booking, crafting, and gardening. Above all, Leona loved spending time with family. She was also a devoted member of Bellevue Church of Christ in Dublin.
In addition to her parents, Leona was preceded in death by her husband, David William Hurst, her brother, Irvin Bass, and her son-in-law Jack Wahl.
Her memory will forever be treasured by her children, Connie Wahl of Fountain Inn, S.C., Monty Hurst (Celeste) of Reynolds, GA., Randy Hurst (Rhonda) of Perry, GA., and Lynne Brown (Jeff) of Dublin, GA.; her grandchildren, Joe Beck (Jennifer), Scott Beck, Kimberly Knuchel (Scott), Eli Hurst (Kelsey), Ethan Dennis (Keisha), Dakota Dennis, Peyton Dennis (Jon), and Maranda Sauls (Shane); and her sisters Catherine Whatley and Jean Branam; as well as seventeen great grandchildren, eight great great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family may be contacted at the home of Lynne and Jeff Brown in Dublin, GA.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. Immediately following the visitation, a funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home. Afterward, Leona will be laid to rest in Glen Haven Memorial Gardens in Macon, Georgia.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests memorial donations be given in memory of Leona B. Hurst to Bellevue Rd. Church of Christ at 2214 Bellevue Rd., Dublin, GA 31021.
