Maj. Edward “Ed” Leroy Fly, Jr., USAF (Ret.), 81, joined his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, in Heaven on the morning of Friday, October 3, 2025.
Born in Union, South Carolina, on October 14, 1943, Ed was the son of the late Edward Leroy Fly, Sr. and Edna Havird Fly. A proud patriot, Ed dedicated 22 years of honorable service to his country in the United States Air Force, retiring with the rank of Major. His military career included time stationed abroad, including England and Germany, where he developed a deep appreciation for travel and foreign cultures.
His passion for education led him to an undergraduate degree from Wofford College in Spartanburg, and a master’s degree from the University of Arkansas. Following his military service, Ed continued to serve his country as a government contractor with Northrop Grumman for 18 years, working as an Avionics Maintenance Officer.
A man of many interests, Ed was known for his wide-ranging collections. He was an excellent marksman who deeply enjoyed shooting sports and sharing those interests with others. He was also involved in his community and devoted over 30 years of his life to shaping young lives as a committed Boy Scout leader.
Above all, Ed was a devoted family man. He dearly loved his family, especially his grandchildren, and found joy in every moment spent with them. He was known for his deep compassion and selflessness, always putting others before himself. He was also man of Christian faith and lived his life with integrity, humility, and grace.
Ed is survived by his loving wife, Beverette Fly of Warner Robins; children, Christina E. Hatcher (Ed) of Macon, and Edward Alexander Fly (Amanda) of San Antonio, Texas; grandchildren, Haley Hatcher Knight (Christian), Hanna Alexanderia Hatcher, Zachary Alexander Fly, and Mason James Fly. He is also survived by his brother, John Maynard Fly (Jenny) of Spartanburg, North Carolina.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon at McCullough Funeral Home. A funeral service will immediately follow at 12:00 p.m. in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home. Afterward, Maj. Edward “Ed” Leroy Fly, Jr., USAF (Ret.) will be laid to rest in Georgia Veterans Memorial Gardens at 2:30 p.m. with Full Military Honors.
