Margaret Mary Orella “Maggie” Harris, 98, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 16, 2023.
Maggie was born on January 31, 1925, in Georgetown, British Guyana to the late Theodore and Margaret Orella. Her father was a cattle rancher who helped the British during the war and her mother was subsequently knighted by Queen Elizabeth as an Ordinary Member of the British Empire. Maggie was also a phenomenal person who touched the lives of so many through art; she traveled to many museums and studied art all over the world. An artist of many different mediums, Maggie was a long-time member of the Fine Arts Society and Middle Georgia Arts Association. A devout Catholic, she attended convent school in Georgetown in her early years. She went on to become an officer’s wife for many years to the love of her life, John, and was an incredible mom. In her younger years, she was outdoorsy and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Her presence will be deeply missed by those who loved her.
In addition to her parents, Maggie was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, John Cain Harris, son, Peter Paul Harris, and brother, Louis Orella.
Her memory will forever be treasured by her children, John Harris (Connie) of Perry, Georgia, Thomas Harris (Tina) of Poquoson, Virginia, Mark Harris of Warner Robins, Georgia, Michael Harris (Leanne) of Centerville, Georgia, and Margaret “Sissy” Harris of Fort Valley, Georgia, along with numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, and other loving family members and friends.
A memorial gathering will be Saturday, December 23, 2023, from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. A memorial service will immediately follow at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home. Afterward, Maggie will be laid to rest in Andersonville National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests memorial donations be given in memory of Maggie Harris to Fine Art Society of Middle Georgia at 149 South Commercial Circle, Warner Robins, GA 31088 or St. Jude Children’s Hospital at 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
