Mary Jo Coleman

January 23, 1936 — September 18, 2023

A beloved Georgia native, Mary Jo Coleman, passed away peacefully at her residence in Warner Robins on Monday, September 18, 2023, at the age of 87.

Mary Jo was born on January 23, 1936, in Cordele, Georgia, to the late Birl and Bessie Wright Barker. As a young woman, she married her husband, the late William Douglas Coleman. Together, they built a loving family that became the center of Mary Jo's life. She dedicated herself wholeheartedly to her children, becoming an unwavering presence at all their sports and extracurricular activities, including her active involvement with the Boy Scouts and her role as a Girl Scouts leader. Mary Jo was the ultimate cheerleader for her children, celebrating their achievements with pride and joy.

As her children grew and embarked on their own paths, Mary Jo began a fulfilling career as a civilian at Robins Air Force Base. Her dedication and respect for her work made her a highly regarded member of the Robins Air Force Base community, where she served faithfully for several years until her well-earned retirement.

Mary Jo was not only devoted to her family and career but also to her faith. She was a cherished member of Second Baptist Church, where she served as a treasurer to her Sunday School class. Mary Jo had a passion for sports, with a special place in her heart for the Atlanta Braves baseball team. Her creative spirit also made her a remarkable seamstress, capable of crafting anything from elegant dresses to band uniforms and other clothing items. She even possessed the talent to skillfully upholster a chair, showcasing her artistic abilities. During the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mary Jo tirelessly sewed thousands of masks to help protect her community and keep others safe, embodying the spirit of selflessness and compassion.

She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered as a loving mother, a dedicated public servant, a faithful church member, a talented seamstress, and an ardent sports enthusiast.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mary was also preceded in death by her son, David Jason Coleman; and all of her siblings, Jackson Barker, Sara Woodward, and Hazel Higgs.

Her memory will forever be treasured by her children, Vicky Mitchell (Steve) of Bonaire; Donald Coleman (Angie) of Reynolds; Daryl Coleman (Shelly) of Bonaire; grandchildren, Logan Coleman, Trey Mitchell (Nicole), Tyler Mitchell, Amanda Coleman, Matthew Coleman, Jessi Coleman, Evan Coleman; great-grandchildren, Aiden Coleman and Watson Mitchell; along with several other extended family members and friends.
