Mary S. Poindexter passed away on Thursday, May 7, 2026.
Mary was born on August 5, 1940, in Denmark, South Carolina, to the late Hubert Jerome and Ida Vesta Copeland Still. Though she grew up in South Carolina, North Carolina always held a special place in her heart and became the place she called home.
Mary was a caring and loving woman whose life was centered around her family, friends, and faith. She was a teacher’s aide for the Winston-Salem Forsyth County Board of Education for 25 years until her retirement. Mary worked hard throughout her life to provide for her family and always placed the needs of others before her own.
She deeply loved her family and cherished animals as if they were her own children. She brought joy to those around her with her infectious smile and laugh. Her faith was her cornerstone, and she was a beloved pastor’s wife. Mary also loved singing and listening to gospel music, especially from Bill Gaither.
She will be remembered for her kindness, compassion, faith, and unwavering love for her family and friends.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Poindexter; former husband and best friend, Northrup Hood; her son, Dale Corwyn Hood; and her brothers, Copeland Burdell “Buddy” Still Sr. and Hubert “Jerome” Still.
Her memory will forever be treasured by her daughter, Ginger Hood Towe (Michael “Steven” Towe Jr.); grandson, Matthew Towe; great-grandson, Noah Towe; daughter-in-law, Sandy Hood; step grandchildren, Brandon Ashworth (Shannon) and Amber Broman (Nathan); her step great-grandchildren Lana, Dakota, Audrey, Sadie, Kayden, Kaleb, and Korbyn; her nieces Christy (Tim) and Mandy; nephew Copeland Still; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law; and friends; as well as her loving dog, “Zoee.”
A memorial gathering will be held from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at McCullough Funeral Home. Afterward, Mary S. Poindexter will be laid to rest privately in Pinnacle, North Carolina.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the Summerhill 500 Hall and especially to Mary’s favorite CNA, Tia Perry.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be given in memory of Mary to Gentiva Hospice at 105 Jim Mason Ct #100, Warner Robins, GA 31088; or Summerhill Senior Living CNAs at 500 Stanley St, Perry, GA 31069.
