Melba L. (White) Djuvstad, 98, passed away on Thursday, July 16, 2026, in Macon, GA. Born in Missouri in 1928, Melba married the love of her life, Olaf (Whitey) Djuvstad, a Norwegian immigrant, when he returned from service in the U.S. Army with her brother, Bud in 1948.
In 1951 while pregnant with their daughter, Rana Kay, they moved to Long Beach California to follow his father, Olaus, a tailor with J.C. Penney Store. Whitey worked for McDonald Douglas Aviation, then later for North American Rockwell.
Eight years later, Eric Jon was born in 1960, and they moved to Lakewood, California, where she had close neighbors and lifelong friends.
Melba stayed home for years to raise the children and was busy with home and their church, St. Timothy Lutheran. She loved her Lord and her church.
One of her greatest loves was singing, and she sang in the church choir for at least sixty years. Even in her go's, she was still driving others to church and choir rehearsal.
She became part of an amateur group called "Sweet Adelines" that traveled and performed all over Southern California.
Bridge groups were held in their home weekly with lots of camaraderie.
She worked for several years for the Long Beach Unified School District until 1994.
Melba enjoyed traveling, and was able to be in Atlanta, Georgia at her daughter's house for the 1996 Olympics.
She was famous for detailed letters and thank you notes, and for her vast collection of angels.
As it became obvious that she would live a very long life, and medical decisions were pressing, she relocated to Macon, GA, where her daughter, Rana K. Munna, MD now practices medicine. Eric and his family remain in Long Beach, Ca. She took up residence at then Watercrest (now Westhill) Assisted Living, one mile from her daughter's office. There, she made many friends, played cards with several groups, and until the last day of her life could beat anyone in Chinese Checkers.
Upon moving to Macon, she joined North Macon Presbyterian Church where Rana and Joseph attend and delighted in knowing the love and kindness of so many there, especially her pastor, Hunter Stevenson.
She leaves behind her son, Eric J. Djuvstad (Janet) and grandson Jonathan, in Long Beach, Ca; Rana K. Munna, MD (Joseph Egloff) in Forsyth, GA, grandson, Christian A. Munna, retired USMC in Sneads Ferry, N.C., Brian and Angela Wright and their children Carlisle and Cole in Nashville, TN, and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents, Olaf (Whitey) Djuvstad, her grandson, Gian-Carlo Munna, sister Juanita, and brothers Buddie, Harold, and Billy.
Melba and her family are eternally grateful for the loving care that Pamela provided her daily, and for the joyful hours spent with Margaret (Maggie) and Rose.
A celebration of her life is planned Sunday, August 23, 2026, at Westhill Assisted Living, 111 Providence Blvd, Macon, GA, from 3:00 until 5:00.
Any donations in her memory may be made to either St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Lakewood, California, or to North Macon Presbyterian Church, in Macon, GA.
"He will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more." (Revelation 21:4.)
