Michael Jon Mercer was called home by the Lord on April 22, 2026, at the age of 64, after a long, courageous battle with illness.
Michael was born on October 12, 1961, in Gouverneur, New York. Soon thereafter, he was adopted by Fred and Ruby Mercer. His sister, Marilea, excited to be getting a brother, asked if she could name him. She chose Michael Jon so they would have the same initials.
When Michael was 6 years old, the family moved to Milledgeville, Georgia, where they lived until he was 10, and then they moved to Warner Robins, Georgia. Michael made Warner Robins his home for the rest of his life.
Michael attended Northside High School, graduating in 1979. After graduation, he enlisted in the Army along with his best friends, David Judah and Jeff Marble. He served honorably in the 3rd Armored Division for 4 years. During that time, he was stationed in Germany and Ft. Hood in Waco, TX. After leaving the Army, Michael worked for many years as a restaurant manager and then as a truck driver before retiring.
In 1985, he married the love of his life, Amanda Martin. Although that marriage didn’t work out, they later found each other again in 2010. They soon realized they should have been together all along, so they remarried in 2018.
Several years ago, Michael successfully went on a quest to find his birth family. He was able to reconnect with his birth mother and his siblings. He often said finding them was such a blessing.
Michael was a big man, both physically and in personality. He was loved by everyone who knew him. He had a boisterous laugh and loved to joke around with everyone. If you were around him, you were laughing. He was a kind and generous soul who wanted to and did help everyone around him. He loved computer games, fishing, WWII documentaries, his dog, Bosco, and his cat, Amelia.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Ruby Mercer, and his birth mother, Ethel Grace Teeter.
He is survived by his wife, Amanda; his step-son, Jason Casilli; his sisters, Marilea Butler, Cheryl Rollman (Spencer), Cindy McCartha, and Holly McCartha; his brothers, Richard McCartha, Don McCartha, and Bruce McCartha; his brother-in-law, Gary Martin (LiAnne); two granddaughters, Gail Casilli and Megan Casilli; a great-granddaughter, Eloise Yaughn; and a plethora of nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., at McCullough Funeral Home. Afterward, Michael will be laid to rest privately.
In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to the Humane Society of Houston County.
