Richard John Newman, Sr., a proud United States Air Force veteran and devoted community servant, passed away on June 23, 2025, at the age of 75. Born on December 13, 1949, in Pasadena, California, Richard was the beloved son of the late Billie and Lyn Casterlaw Newman.
Richard graduated from Lee High School in Huntsville, Alabama, and later went on to serve his country with honor in the United States Air Force. Over a distinguished 23-year career, he rose to the rank of Master Sergeant (MSGT), proudly serving as a KC-10 Boom Operator. A Vietnam War veteran, Richard exemplified courage, professionalism, and dedication throughout his military service. During his time on active duty, he also obtained his associate degree, reflecting his commitment to personal growth and lifelong learning."
A lifelong supporter of veterans, Richard remained active in his community as a dedicated member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and the American Legion. He served as both Post Chaplain and Post Commander, roles in which he was respected for his steady leadership, faith, and commitment to supporting fellow service members.
Richard was deeply involved in the Masonic community. He was a dedicated Mason and Shriner, affiliated with the Scottish Rite, where he embodied the principles of brotherhood, charity, and personal integrity.
Beyond his military and civic contributions, Richard was a man who embraced life’s joys and passions. He was an enthusiastic fan of Georgia Bulldogs and Auburn football, and he rarely missed a NASCAR race. Whether it was game day or race day, he brought his trademark enthusiasm and sense of fun to everything he loved.
Richard will be remembered not only for his service and leadership but for his unwavering loyalty to family, his patriotism, and his generosity of spirit.
His memory will forever be treasured by his wife, Shirley; sons, Richard Newman, Jr. (Sallie) and David Newman (Brandy); and grandchildren, Rebecca Newman (Dekota) and Haleigh Newman (Kaitlyn France).
Visitation will be Thursday, June 26, 2025, from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home with a funeral service immediately following in the chapel. Afterward, Richard will be laid to rest in Magnolia Park Cemetery.
