It is with deep sorrow and much love that we announce the passing of Nydia Adames-Petty on January 27, 2025. She was 57.
Born on January 23, 1968, in Santurce, Puerto Rico, Nydia was the eldest daughter of her late parents, Rafael Adames-Longo and Nydia R. Adames of Zion, Illinois. Affectionately known as "Chiqui" to her siblings, Nydia's family moved first to Tegucigalpa, Honduras, and then to the northern suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. A 1985 graduate of Zion-Benton Township High School, she went on to earn her degree in Spanish and Education from Eastern Illinois University in 1989.
Driven by an unwavering commitment to community and social justice, Nydia dedicated her career to serving others through mission-focused organizations. Her professional journey included roles at Marquette University Upward Bound, Catholic Charities, the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, NAMI Collier County (FL), Pearson VUE, and most recently, Worksource Georgia. In each role, she built strong relationships with colleagues, students, clients, and their families, leaving a lasting impact on their lives.
Nydia's faith was a cornerstone of her life, and her family was her greatest joy and priority. She was the beloved soulmate and wife of 31 years to Bryan Petty and the devoted mother of Ashley Petty and Chrissy Treloar (Fred). Her love for her granddaughters, Evie and Nessa, was boundless, and she also leaves behind her dearest and oldest BFF, Audrey Gayden.
Friends and family will remember Nydia’s love for travel and cherish the adventures they shared together. Nydia also enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, such as delicious food, a good book, riveting telenovelas, a Steelers victory, and a classic tearjerker movie. Her shoe collection was impressive, only surpassed by her enormous heart and warmth.
Nydia will be deeply missed by her surviving family: her brothers, Rafael (Lizzie), Ariel, and Ivan (Liz); her sister, Nydia Robinson (Tony); nieces, Zoey and Alexis Adames, and Arielle Robinson; and nephews, Giovanni Adames and Tyler Robinson. They loved her dearly and will always hold her playfulness, wisdom, and unshakeable loyalty.
