Sigrid E. Lewis, 88, entered into rest on Monday, July 7, 2025.
Sigrid was born on September 26, 1936, in Breslau, Germany, to the late William and Elizabeth Wieland. She was raised in Leipzig and, with courage and determination, later defected to West Germany. There, she worked as a butcher until 1958, when fate intervened and she met her sweetheart, Jimmy, who was serving in the United States Air Force. The two fell in love, married, and welcomed their son Robert, before relocating to McClellan Air Force Base in California, where they began their journey together.
As a proud military spouse, Sigrid embraced the nomadic lifestyle, moving with her family through various duty stations including Hawaii, Jacksonville, Arkansas, Newport News, Virginia, and eventually settling in Warner Robins, Georgia.
A tireless worker who simply couldn’t sit still, Sigrid held a wide array of jobs throughout her life including driving a school bus, working at McDonald’s, babysitting, and eventually starting a career in civil service. What began in the base commissary deli, bagging and stocking groceries, blossomed into a long and successful tenure in Supply at Robins Air Force Base, where she ultimately retired.
Sigrid was known for her no-nonsense approach to life; she didn’t believe in doing anything half-assed and wanted things done now. Her energy, creativity, and impatience all blended into a dynamic personality that left a lasting impression on everyone she met.
She had a passion for gardening, loved crafting festive table decorations for the holidays to gift to friends and family, and truly cherished time spent with her circle of friends. Sigrid also helped establish a German Club in the area, serving as a past president. She found great joy in the group’s excursions and dinner gatherings, which kept her connected to her roots and surrounded by companionship. Her bright countenance will be deeply missed by all those who had the pleasure of knowing her.
Her memory will forever be treasured by her loving husband, Jimmy F. Lewis; son, Robert Lewis (Joanne Moore) of Kennesaw, Georgia; grandchildren, Gregori J. Lewis (Dora Grimes) and Alexander Franklin Lewis ( ); great-grandchildren, Eleanor, Max, Lucy, and Holland Lewis, Taylor Moore and Rae Anne Moore; great-great-grandchildren, Aiden Moore and Lane Moore; and siblings, Klaus Wieland and Vernor Wieland.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 11, 2025, at Magnolia Park Cemetery, where Sigrid will be laid to rest.
