Smsgt. Garland Boatwright, Usaf (Ret.)

September 12, 1938 — August 11, 2023

SMSgt. Garland Boatwright, USAF (Ret.), a devoted husband, a dedicated serviceman, and a faithful follower of Christ, joined his Lord and Savior in Heaven on Friday, August 11, 2023.

Born in Marion, South Carolina, on September 12, 1938, Garland was the son of the late Eula Boatwright Akins. He graduated from high school before entering into the United States Air Force. Garland honorably served in the military for several years before retiring with the rank of Senior Master Sergeant. Even after his military service concluded, Garland's sense of duty remained steadfast. He continued to contribute to the welfare of his community, by serving on Robins Air Force Base in civil service until his second and final retirement. His diligent work ethic and genuine care for others left an indelible mark on the lives he touched. Of the Christian faith, Garland was a member of the Harvest Cathedral Church.

Beyond his commitments, Garland cherished the simple joys of life. In his leisure time, he found respite by the water's edge, casting his fishing line into the depths, or perfecting his swing on the golf course. His green thumb brought forth vibrant blossoms from his garden, a testament to his nurturing spirit. And when the engines roared on the NASCAR track, Garland's eyes lit up with excitement, a devoted fan of the sport.

In addition to his parents, Garland was preceded in death by his wife, Loraine Boatwright; and stepson, Hal Hobgood.

His memory will forever be treasured by his half-siblings, James Askins, Jr., Frank Askins, Peggy Ann Fryor, Thomas Askins, and Michael Askins; as well as brother-in-law, Jim Nash (Gay); and June Clark; and best friend, William “Bill” Skinner.

A memorial gathering will be held on Tuesday, August 15, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. A memorial service will immediately follow at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home. Garland will be laid to rest privately.
