Virginia Marie “Ginny” Newberry, 70, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 5, 2026.

Ginny was born on January 27, 1956, to the late James Warren and Betty Anderson Saxon in Salina, Kansas. Growing up in a military family, Ginny moved around a lot, spending time in Salina, Guam, and Rome, New York.

She would ultimately come to make Warner Robins her home, where she became deeply involved in Northside High School. Ginny was the Homecoming Queen, was involved in many clubs, and became the captain of the cheerleaders before graduating in 1974. She went on to earn both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Mercer University.

Ginny taught history for one year at Bleckley County High School before returning to her alma mater, Northside High School, to lead a storied career of nearly four decades. Even after retiring from full-time teaching, Ginny continued in a part time role at several schools in the area.

Ginny loved history and was a speed reader, constantly flying through books at a dizzying pace. She was particularly fond of British media and detective stories. Ginny enjoyed ‘70s music, thrifting and antique shopping, decorating for the holidays, especially Christmas, and going camping in the mountains. She could often be found playing cards or enjoying trivia with her beloved husband, Dale.

None of Ginny’s hobbies could compare to the joy she found in her family. She adored her grandbabies, to whom she was affectionately known as “Gigi,” and she never missed an opportunity to love on them.

Ginny carried an abundance of happiness and positivity that few could match. She was completely selfless, always finding a way to put others before herself, and she always had an intelligent word to share. Ginny had a sweetness in her soul that left a lasting impression on anyone who had the pleasure of meeting her.

Ginny’s memory will forever be cherished by her husband, Dennis “Dale” Newberry; her children, Denny Newberry (Kelley) of Marietta, Georgia, John David Smith, Jr. (Sonya) of Warner Robins, Georgia, and James Newberry (Mia Yun) of Hollywood, California; her grandchildren, Addi Newberry, Austin Newberry, Sophie Smith, and John David Smith, III; her brother, James W. “Jimmy” Saxon (Jo-Ann); her nieces, Sarah Marie Rentz (James) and Katie Elizabeth Alexander (Michael), and her nephew, James W. Saxon, III (Jamie); along with a host of extended family members and friends.

Visitation will be Friday, July 10, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held after visitation at 2:00 on Friday, July 10, 2026, in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home. Following the service, Ginny will be laid to rest in Magnolia Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests memorial donations be given in memory of Ginny to the American Cancer Society at donate.cancer.org.
