On January 12, 2025, Jessie “Liz” Elizabeth Greenwood, Grammy, and her devoted husband, William “Will” Harold Greenwood, Grandaddy, began their final journey from this earth, leaving behind a legacy of love, family, and unwavering faith. Their lives intertwined on June 12, 1959, and sparked a shared commitment to family that became the foundation of their 65-year marriage and eternal love story.
Will was born on December 18, 1937, in Marion, Virginia, to Harold and Margueritte Greenwood. Two years later, on September 27, 1939, Liz was welcomed into the world in Atkins, Virginia, by her parents ZMK (Kempton) and Lucille Fulton. Liz weighed only two pounds at birth and was saved by her father crafting the first incubator for the local hospital. Will and Liz’s paths first crossed at Marion High School, where they began dating after being introduced at a picnic. After initially attending MIT, Will returned to Virginia where he continued to court and eventually marry Liz. He earned his degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Virginia in 1964.
From their early years managing life as students and raising their firstborn, Robert, to navigating military life and raising two more children—Allison and Sarah—the Greenwoods embraced every chapter with grace. Will’s career in the Air Force took them across the country, and they established a loving home filled with laughter, faith, and kindness wherever they settled. The Greenwoods were active members of local church congregations throughout their assignments, with the family’s final move to Warner Robins, Georgia, in 1977 providing their church home and family at First Presbyterian Church of Warner Robins.
Their commitment to family was evident through countless memories. They created magic during Christmases, hosted vibrant gatherings, and celebrated births, graduations, and weddings, always placing family at the center of their lives and praising God for their blessings. Each of their children and spouses—Robert and Donna (Hale), Allison and Carlos Bascas, and Sarah and Ken Broussard—and their grandchildren—Kemp (Catalina), Daniel (Amber), Zach, Andrew (Nissa), Chelsea (Geoff), Amanda (Fred), and Savannah—held a special place in Grammy and Grandaddy's hearts. Their deep love extended further with the blessing of great-grandchildren: Elena, Anna, Caius, Inara, Landon, and Preston.
Robert, Allison, and Sarah were blessed with a childhood filled with love and support, with lessons in unconditional love and faith imparted by their parents, shaping their family values and their own parenting. These children and their spouses are grateful for the examples set by Will and Liz of a loving marriage and decades of memories spent with their families.
The grandchildren carry their own treasured memories, remembering special nights they spent in Warner Robins, enjoying rich conversations that crossed generations. The grandchildren cherish the warmth of family visits, the promise of dinner rolls, and the lessons learned through love and humor. There were treasured quiet moments singing or reading with Grandaddy, and there was laughing to the point of tears with Grammy.
Even as they faced life’s challenges—Will’s battle with Parkinson’s and Liz’s fight against cancer—their spirits remained resilient. They continued to support one another, illustrating the depth of their bond. Liz’s wish during her last days—to “kiss Daddy”—epitomized the profound love they shared. It was a love that knew no distance, a commitment that lasted a lifetime, and a journey that they took hand-in-hand even in their final moments.
Will took his last breath one day after Liz left this earth, and they were reunited in the presence of the Lord on January 13, 2025. Their family is comforted by the knowledge that their spirits are together once more, singing praises and dancing with joy, surrounded by the love they built over decades.
Will and Liz Greenwood were more than parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents—they were a shining example of love, unity, and faith for all who knew them. Their legacy of love endures in the hearts of their family and friends, inspiring generations to come. May their souls rest in peace, forever cherished by those who were fortunate to be part of their extraordinary story.
